Custom Interior Stair Railings in Rome, GA

Ornate iron stair railing with large cast newel posts and a wood handrail, a custom metal railing by Fabco Fabrications

A staircase railing is furniture you hold on to: it has to look right in the room, feel solid in the hand and meet code. Fabco Fabrications designs, builds and installs custom interior stair railings for homes, churches and businesses in Rome, Floyd County and Northwest Georgia. Railings are built in our shop, and fitted on site.

Railing styles

  • Iron balusters with a wood handrail: the most popular look, using plain, twisted, knuckle or basket balusters under an oak or other wood cap.
  • Scroll and panel railings with repeating ornamental panels for a formal foyer.
  • All-metal railings with a steel or aluminum cap for a clean, modern or industrial look, including horizontal-bar designs.
  • Curved and spiral stair railings bent to follow a radius stair, which is one of the harder jobs to get right and where custom fabrication really pays off.

Materials

We work with steel, aluminum, cast iron, stainless steel, brass, bronze and wood. That lets us combine an iron baluster pattern with a wood handrail, add brass or bronze accents, or match an existing newel post or trim color.

What the code usually asks for

Most Georgia jurisdictions build to the International Residential Code (IRC) with state amendments. For a typical house, that generally means:

  • A handrail on at least one side of any flight with four or more risers, mounted 34–38 inches above the stair nosings.
  • A graspable handrail profile, so a family member or guest can actually get a grip on it.
  • Guards (the railing on the open side) with openings small enough that a 4-inch sphere can’t pass through. On the open side of the stair itself the limit is 4-3/8 inches.

Commercial buildings follow the International Building Code, which has stricter guard heights. Your local building department has the final say on what’s required for your project.

How it works

  1. Consultation and measuring. We look at the staircase, newel locations and any existing railing. On new construction we measure once the treads and finished floors are in.
  2. Design. We settle the baluster pattern, handrail profile, material and finish with you.
  3. Fabrication. Built in our Cave Spring shop.
  4. Installation. Fitted and anchored on site.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace wood balusters with iron and keep my handrail?

Often, yes. It depends on the condition of the handrail and newels. We’ll look at what’s there and tell you whether to keep it or replace it.

Can you build a railing for a curved or spiral staircase?

Yes. Curved and spiral stairs need the rail bent to the stair’s radius, and that’s exactly the kind of custom work we do in our shop.

When should I call you on a new house?

Early, so the railing can be planned into the design. Final measurements happen after the treads and flooring are installed.
