Outdoor steps get rain, ice, sun and heavy use, and a solid railing is often what makes them safe. Fabco Fabrications builds and installs custom exterior stair railings for front entries, porches, decks, pools and commercial buildings in Rome, Floyd County and Northwest Georgia. We fabricate in our shop, and install on site.

Where exterior stair railings go
Front entry and porch steps, from a short brick stoop to a grand double stair.
Deck and patio stairs leading down to the yard.
Pool and terrace steps where wet surfaces make a handrail important.
Exterior spiral stairs to a balcony or upper deck.
Commercial and church entrances, where railings often need to meet accessibility rules.
Built for the outdoors
Material choice matters more outside. Aluminum doesn’t rust and suits pools and damp sites. Steel is stronger and heavier and needs a good protective finish and upkeep. We also work in stainless steel, cast iron, brass and bronze. How the railing is anchored into concrete, brick, stone or a wood deck is just as important as the railing itself, and we plan that on site.
Code basics
Under the International Residential Code used across most of Georgia, a stair with four or more risers generally needs a handrail on at least one side, 34–38 inches above the nosings. Open sides of stairs and landings more than 30 inches above grade need guards. Commercial and public entrances usually follow the International Building Code and ADA rules, which call for handrails on both sides, extensions at the top and bottom, and specific grip sizes. Your local building department has the final say.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a railing on my front steps?
Under the residential code, stairs with four or more risers generally need a handrail on at least one side. Even on shorter steps, a rail helps anyone who is unsteady on their feet.
Aluminum or steel for outdoor stairs?
Aluminum resists rust and is lighter, which makes it good around pools. Steel is stronger and has a heavier wrought-iron feel, but it needs its finish maintained. We’ll recommend one for your site.
Can you attach a railing to brick or stone steps?
Yes. Railings can be core-drilled into concrete, brick or stone, or side-mounted, depending on the steps. We check the masonry first.
